Although the satellite images give users a godlike power in jumping from one continent to the next in the blink of an eye, they are also highly abstracted from time, nature and their interrelationships.
Google Maps images are not updated in real time, but instead stem from several months or years old datasets. Their exact dates remain unknown to the user.

‘juxtapose’ is a series of images taken directly from Google Maps that expose distant places, far from society, shown simultaneously under the force of contrary seasons and weather phenomena at varying times.
The images arise from glitches which are created automatically when Google Maps’ algorithm stitches images of updated photos with prior recorded ones together in a grid- like view.
The glitched images force viewers to interrogate how technology changes our understanding of time, space and place.

All images were taken directly from Firefox 16.0.2, without subsequent postproduction, editing or color correction.

Exhibited at the Fach & Asendorf Gallery, NODE13 – Forum for Digital Arts in Frankfurt and Enter 6: Biopolis in Prague.
 
 

Dark, blurry electronic music and non-linear rhythms meld with hypnotic, abstract visuals, superimposed on a matrix of rods.
Image and sound go hand in hand -each influences the other, feeds off the other- and in this fusion, play with the perception of space and reality.

A Rock Paper Scissors Tournament starring Hugo Chavez, Hu Jintao, Barack Obama, John Paul II, Kim Jong-il, Idi Amin, Queen Elizabeth and Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Created during the ‘Honest’ Workshop on ‘creating a common language with laughs’ held by Cary Murnion in Fabrica, Benetton’s communication research centre.

Designed to go viral, the 3-day project went viral immediately with over 150k views in the first week and features on Mashable, NERDCORE/Crackajack, MSN, Yahoo News, Firstpost, ilPost, News.com.au and Herald Sun.

Both music and video have been created parallel and influenced each other. The main direction was defined by choosing mundane objects around the artists’ environment in order to build models and record visuals as well as sounds from them.
Combining ice, porcelain, wood, metal and balsamic vinegar led to this unique mixture of artificial and natural landscapes that act as the projection surface for the visuals but also as sound material.

Although the music is a little too solemn, there is a consistent line such as the flow line of the light, the camera works, reflection to the surface of the water in the construction of the whole concept, suggests the author’s sense of balance.

EMPTY KINGDOM

It is a basic sound visualization of Clark’s ‘Com Touch’. The track has been analyzed with heavy use of the fantastic sonic visualizer and its vamp plugins.

A vvvv Patch reads those csv files from Sonic Visualizer, syncs them with the audio and triggers the visuals in realtime by information on the track’s notes, pitch and volume.

Developed during the workshop ‘Havesting Nature’ with Formafantasma in Fabrica.

Arianna Di Betta and I developed an application to use people’s smiles as an input to control a simple balance game. Myoelectronic sensors detect the muscle contraction on both sides of the faces and shift the balance board. By following the instructions on screen funny and bizarre facial expressions arise and are captured with the webcam.

Piece of Paper was realized with a setup of triangle-cut paper sculptures, various pop-up sculptures and 40 kg of soil in the photo studio of Fabrica.
The only light comes from two video projectors reacting to Amon Tobin‘s track ‘Piece of Paper’ in realtime through a software programmed in vvvv. The visuals – partly mapped to the sculptures, partly non-mapped – are generative and based on algorithms, some nature footage shot in Italy and Croatia and, of course, the audio.

By combining the precise technique of projection mapping with its contrary – unmodified two-dimensional images distorted by projection onto jagged physical objects – a sense of the dystopic and surreal is emphasized, enhancing the interplay between music and visuals.
